Awards Ceremony Back for 2009 with very UK-friendly list
The Urban Music Awards (UMAs) return for 2009, retaining their UK-friendly ethos (and shrewd, street-friendly and an almost ‘anti-MOBO’, anti-mainstream approach).
Gospel Nominees
The gospel nominees list isn’t too bad either: Guvna B receives what will no doubt be a popular nomination, and last year’s winners 29th Chapter (one of the scene’s most consistent Hip-hop groups) are deservedly back again.
Also good to see Sons of Light in the mix, one of the UK’s most underrated and under-reported success stories of the past two years. Their album S.o.L is signed to US independent label Avista Records and is still one of the best things to come out of UK gospel in the past decade, up there with Raymond & Co’s ‘Playing Games‘ and Nu Colours’ ‘Nu Colours‘ project.
Other welcome names include the MOBO nominated New Direction Crew (another well-deserved nomination), their label-mate Jahaziel (2008 MOBO winner), and the 2009 MOBO gospel winner Victizzle.
Better this time…
Here’s to hoping this year’s doesn’t go the same way as last year’s at the 02, which had to be abandoned due to foolishness from people who should know better…
